Il territorio di Carovilli presenta tracce diffuse di frequentazione umana nella preistoria. Rimangono, inoltre, imponenti tracce della civilizzazione sannitica nelle diverse cinture megalitiche che ne costellano il territorio, tra le quali emerge il possente sistema fortificato di Monte Ferrante, a ridosso dell’attuale centro abitato. E’ definito il paese del tartufo, poiché ospita una delle tartufare più grandi d’Europa. Posto a cavallo di due tratturi che ne solcano il territorio (Celano-Foggia e Castel di Sangro-Lucera), è un borgo storico mirabilmente conservato, segnato da grande equilibrio costruttivo, attraverso un accorto uso della pietra e un’armonica composizione degli spazi. Il paese sorge incastonato tra tre monti (un vulcano spento di nome Monte Ferrante, Monte Ingitte e Monte Coste) ed è definito un gioiello incastonato nel verde, grazie alla presenza di estesi boschi e paesaggi incontaminati quali Bosco la Selva di Castiglione, Grotta del Vomero, Sorgente Capo d’Acqua e Fonte Briccioso. Il terremoto del 1805, che distrusse molti paesi molisani, provocò pochi danni al borgo di Carovilli: Santo Stefano del Lupo, in quell’occasione, aveva avvertito la popolazione dell’avvicinarsi del terremoto con tre rintocchi di campana; i tre rintocchi vengono ancora suonati durante la festa del Santo. La parrocchiale risale al Seicento; chiesa a tre navate, è da vedere il battistero, le acquasantiere, l’organo, le statue lignee, le tele, l’altare di Santo Stefano del Lupo, nativo del luogo e uno dei santi molisani, dove sono conservati i suoi resti.
Vicino all’abitato, sorge la suggestiva chiesa di San Domenico, posta su un tratturello, legata alla transumanza, come confermato da un’epigrafe. A qualche chilometro da Carovilli sorge Castiglione, la frazione più importante del comune, sormontata dal vecchio abitato, suggestivamente posto su uno spuntone roccioso ed abbandonato nel ‘700. Recentemente, lo studioso del territorio Bruno Paglione ha identificato nell’agro del comune, a 1200 mt s.l.m. un importante sito fossilifero, del miocene, ove sono stati rinvenuti, tra l’altro, numerosi denti di squali, di sottospecie diverse, tutte estinte.
Tra le varie manifestazioni che animano l’estate, suggestivo è il ‘Mercatino sotto le stelle’, un piccolo mercato di oggetti di antiquariato e collezionismo. Solitamente è accompagnato dal ‘Festival degli Artisti di Strada’. Si svolge di solito nei giorni del 9 e 10 agosto. Passeggiando per le strade di Carovilli nei giorni del mercatino sotto le stelle, è possibile gustare prodotti della cucina tipica carovillese e divertirsi tra gli spazi espositivi e le performance degli artisti.

The territory of Carovilli shows signs of widespread human presence in prehistoric times. A few kilometers from Castiglione Carovilli rises, the most important fraction of the town, surmounted by the old town, attractively situated on a rocky outcrop and abandoned in 700. Recently, the scholar Bruno Paglione has identified land in the countryside of the town, at 1200 m asl an important fossil site, the Miocene, where were found, among other things, numerous shark teeth, a different subspecies, all extinct.
Among the various events that enliven the summer, is the impressive ‘Market under the stars’, a small market of antiques and collectibles. It is usually accompanied by the ‘Festival of Street Artists’. It takes place usually in the days of 9 and 10 August. Walking through the streets in the days of Carovilli market under the stars, you can taste typical products of carovillese and enjoying the exhibition spaces and artists’ performances.
